Altitude Limited Electric Soaring, known for short as ALES, is a form of soaring competition for electric powered, self launching sailplanes equipped with automatic motor cutoffs to limit launch height. The aircraft range from entry-level planes like the Parkzone Radian, to high-performance open-class soarers with electric motors and folding propellers.
A standardized altitude sensor/cutoff knows as the Competition Altimeter for Models (or CAM) is used to ensure fair starts.
See the sidebar for details on rules, organizations and places to get a CAM for your aircraft.
